Girls Youth

Girls rugby at Portumna RFC is thriving  and still growing.

We offer a full structure for girls from minis  right up to U16, with a new U16s team launching for the 2025/26 season. Whether a girl has never touched a rugby ball or already plays other sports, there’s a place here to learn, play, and belong.

Teams for 2025/26:

  • U16s – girls born 2010 & 2011 (new team)
  • U14s – girls born 2012 & 2013
  • U12s – girls born 2014 & 2015
  • U10s – girls born 2016 & 2017
  • Minis – girls born 2018 to 2020

We also support crossover players from GAA, soccer and athletics. Many of our girls play multiple sports.

What Girls Can Expect

  • Weekly training with IRFU-qualified coaches
  • Friendly and competitive blitzes and festivals throughout Connacht
  • A strong, supportive team culture,  built on fun, respect and effort
  • Regular trips to matches and stadiums like Dexcom Stadium and the Aviva
  • Lasting friendships , on and off the pitch

Why Rugby?  Rugby gives girls:

  • Confidence in contact
  • Teamwork and communication skills
  • Physical strength, coordination, and resilience
  • A space where everyone is involved — every position matters

And above all: rugby is fun. Every girl is encouraged to give it a try and no experience needed.

New Players Welcome

We welcome new girls at every age level, every season. You don’t need to have played before. You don’t need to know the rules. You just need to turn up and give it a go.

School-Club Partnership

Portumna Community School prides itself on the strength of its rugby heritage.  Portumna RFC  support girls rugby at secondary school level across Junior Cycle, TY, Senior Cycle, LCA, and LCVP. Just some recent highlights

  • In December 2024, over 20 Portumna CS girls competed in a Connacht tag-rugby blitz at Loughrea RFC. Ireland international Ailsa Hughes and Connacht’s Wendy Hickey praised the girls for “consistently excellent skills, teamwork, class off‑loads and try‑scoring”
  • In April 2025, an end-of-season 7s blitz, supported by Portumna RFC  Adrian Loughnane and Portumna Community School’s Ms. Durack, and Mr. Plews
