Minis rugby at Portumna RFC is where many children first get involved with the sport. Our youngest teams are known as the Pumas – quick, agile, and strong , but also smart, patient, and adaptable. Open to boys and girls aged 4 to 8, it’s all about learning the game in a fun, safe, and active environment.
Sessions are built around games and simple rugby skills that help develop balance, movement, coordination, and teamwork. There are no drills or pressure, just lots of running, laughing, and learning how to work together.
When & Where?
Parents/Guardians Welcome
We encourage parents/guardians to stay, watch, and if they want, lend a hand. Many of our best coaches started by helping out on the sidelines.
At U12 level, players begin to develop more confidence and control in their game. While the emphasis is still on fun and participation, the rugby starts to look a little more like the full game, with more structure, decisions, and teamwork.
Boys and girls continue to train and play in separate squads, with coaching tailored to their stage of development.
At U12, players build on the basics with more focus on:
Players also begin to play larger team formats (typically 10-a-side) and compete in regional blitzes and festivals organised by Connacht Rugby. Training remains positive and encouraging. Everyone gets game time, and learning continues to be prioritised over winning.
Our U12 boys train with the U13 youth boys squad, and are kindly sponsored by Renew Pharmaceuticals.
From U10s, boys and girls play in separate teams, with age-appropriate coaching, IRFU supports, and a clear structure for growth. U10s begin to focus more on:
Sessions remain light and fun, but start to introduce structure and teamwork in a way that prepares players for the next stages of the game.
